Part II Tile 12. Syria {Damascus} A square stone paste tile painted in underglaze cobalt blue, turquoise, manganese purple and sage green. Two irregularly orientated squares, outlined in a scrolled white line, fill the tile, forming an eight-pointed star. A central rosette is contained by a floral and palmette motif reserved in white against a cobalt blue ground. Each of the four corners contains a flower with a purple centre, reserved in white against a blue ground. 16th century. 9.5 x 9.5 in. {24.1 x 24.1 cm.} Condition: Repaired. Two clean breaks. |
