Tile 18.

Syria {Damascus}

An extremely fine quality, stone paste corner border tile, painted in underglaze cobalt blue, manganese purple and apple green. Delicately drawn flowers and foliage float around a central blue and green saz leaf and are reserved against a milk white ground. A delicate repeating scroll design in white reserved against a cobalt blue ground form a border on two sides. {See Tile 22 in Part I, now in the Detroit Institute of Art, for a similar border}.
16th century.
