Part II Tile 4. Syria {Damascus} A stone paste tile painted in a vibrant underglaze cobalt blue, turquoise and apple green. Two turquoise cusped medallions, reserved against a white ground on opposite corners of the tile, are joined by a serrated ogival lattice scroll containing plum blossoms that bisects the tile diagonally. Two bunches of grapes outlined in black and reserved in white against a cobalt blue ground fall on each side of the scroll together with tendrils and apple green vine leaves. A turquoise and white scrolled border runs along the left vertical side. 16th century. 10.5 x 8.6 in {26.6 x 22 cm} c.f. Ettinghausen, R. Islamic Art in the Metropolitan Museum, 1972. One of the group of Damascus tiles with the use of apple green mentioned on p.104 when referring to the Lockwood de Forest collection. Condition: Repaired. One clean break. |
